Afternoon Elementary Program

FAQ (Afternoon Elementary Program)

Q. My child is in 1st or 2nd grade right now. Can I enroll them in your program?
A.  All current Saplings 2 students and children between the ages of 6 and 8 can apply for G1 & 2 and between the ages of 8 and 10 can apply for G3.
Q. What kind of entrance exam will the students take?

A.  Students will be given a math test, an English language arts test, and an interview alongside their parents. The student’s interview will be conducted entirely in English and parents can choose to speak in either English or Japanese.

Q. When is the exam offered?

A.  There will be three different testing dates, January, February and March. Please see the testing schedule for exact dates. Those who fail the first test still have two more chances. One test fee covers all three test dates.

Q. What if my child doesn't pass the end of year exam? Can they still continue to the next grade level?

A. 80% or above - pass to the next grade level, certificate will be given.
65-79% - review school year progress, passing is at the discretion of the teacher based on the behavior, participation, and maturity of the student. 65% or below - repeat grade.

Q. How are children chosen for the limited seats of the program?

A. After passing both the test and the interview, spots will be given on a first come first serve basis.

Q. Are classes only offered at the Kiba Campus?

A. We opened a class in Tsukishima in April 2018. However, students’ campus will be chosen by the administration considering their address. Either way, we have a school bus (within 8 km) to help students commute.

Q. What can be done if the students need extra practice on language skills?

A.  We recommend you to take supplemental classes on Saturdays once a month from 9:00 a.m.to 11:00 a.m. online, on top of the IXL Math program, Raz-Kids, and writing folders.

Q. What about other commitments or taking days off?

A. Our program provides an education equivalent to elementary schools in the US but we have class for only two hours a day. As a result, class attendance is mandatory. We can only consider families who understand the commitment required by our program.

Q. Will the students receive homework?

A. School will provide a suggested homework. The workload is about 10-15 minutes every night.

Q. Does my child need to bring any supplies or snacks?

A. Learning Tree will provide everything (e.g., stationery, books, a snack). Please do not bring any junk food into school.

Q. What materials does the program use?

A. The curriculum is based on the new Common Core standards used in the United States, but we are enhancing and expanding it where we can. In order to provide the best possible education for our students, teachers will be hand picking and/or designing the various materials used. This will allow us to tailor the educational experience around the individual needs of the class.

Q. Are their any school events?

A. Yes, we will have a welcome day, spring picnic, open-house, summer nature camp, Halloween party, Christmas party, movie nights, and end of year exhibition. (Last year, some events were canceled due to the Corona situation.)

Q.Is it possible to be absent for one semester and not be charged?

A. We only accept fourteen students per class, so even if you are unable to attend for a semester,, the tuition will be charged in order to maintain our quality.

Q.Is it possible to take the entrance exam when we come back to Japan, even if it is outside of the entrance exam dates?

A. We charge 80,000 yen to schedule an entrance exam outside of our normal dates.

Q.Is the school planning to raise the tuition over the years?

We have never raised tuition fees in the past. We do not want to increase the price in the future either. However, from the 2020 to 2021 school year, we needed to set up a digital environment that we did not need before, and by providing the LTonline platform and various services, we have raised the price of the material fee. In addition, from 2021 to 2022, to further promote DX, we will unavoidably incur costs such as $20 per person per month for their individual Google account, and we have decided to raise the facility fee from 2022. We have no plans to raise any more fees for now.
